Business development for Spanish wineries in the United Kingdom
Bizuking’s sector-specific programmes
Who is this programme for?
Spanish wineries with exporting experience that wish to start or relaunch their business development in the United Kingdom.
Why the United Kingdom?
The British market occupies a pre-eminent place in the international wine trade. With a population of more than 67 million inhabitants and a high per capita income, the United Kingdom is one of the world’s top consumers of quality wine. This fact, combined with minimal local production, explains why this country is globally the second largest importer of wine in terms of value, surpassed only by the United States and far behind the rest of countries.
In the United Kingdom, it’s possible to find wines of all categories, varieties and origins, making up one of the most complete offers on the planet. The country is also home to important wine fairs and some of the industry’s most prestigious institutions and professionals. For all these reasons, the United Kingdom is a priority destination for producers from all around the world and a market that sets trends in the sector on a global scale.
As one of the world’s leading wine exporters, Spain also plays a prominent role in the UK. Spanish wine is enjoying growing prestige among the British, and we expect it to continue gaining market share in the coming years. Several factors are likely to boost this trend, such as the economic and environmental cost of transport and changes in taxation and consumer habits, which will introduce a favourable bias towards higher-quality products.
If your winery does not yet have a prominent presence in the UK, you are undoubtedly missing out on business opportunities.
Programme goals and benefits for your business
The programme’s ultimate goal is to help your winery develop its full business potential in one of the most important international wine markets.
These are some of the main benefits you will get by participating in the programme:
- We will provide you with an updated view of the situation, organisation, regulations and opportunities of the British wine market from the particular perspective of your winery and your wines
- We will analyse with you the strengths, capabilities and characteristics of your winery and your wines to compete successfully in the United Kingdom
- We will quantify the business opportunity for your winery in the United Kingdom and help you choose the most appropriate positioning and commercial strategy to develop your full potential and meet your objectives for this market
- We will present your winery and your wines to British importers and distributors selected according to your positioning and commercial strategy, with the aim of starting business relationships, organising meetings and tastings of your wines, and closing export agreements that allow you to materialise your business objectives
What is included?
The programme’s design and organisation are based on Bizuking’s experience carrying out similar projects for Spanish wineries in the United Kingdom from our London head office.
Your participation in the programme includes the following activities and deliverables:
Kick-off meeting [M0] / Follow-up meetings [M1..Mn]
At the beginning of the project, we will have a first online meeting ([M0], estimated duration: 60-90 minutes) in which we will explain in detail the work plan and each of the activities and deliverables included in the project, as well as your participation and that of your team in the different meetings and workshops. In addition, we will agree with you on the initial schedule for the work sessions (workshops and meetings to present deliverables), and we will resolve any questions you may have about the dynamics and organisation of the project.
In addition, we will organise follow-up meetings with you and your team on a fortnightly or monthly basis to review the progress of the activities. These meetings are held online and last about thirty minutes but can be extended if appropriate. You will receive a project’s progress and status report at each follow-up meeting [M1..Mn].
Workshop: Strengths and capabilities assessment [WS1]
This online workshop will have an estimated duration of between four and six hours. During the session, we will analyse and discuss with you and your team the strengths, capabilities and differentiating features of your winery and your wines, in general, and from the particular perspective of the British market. The result of this analysis (“Strengths and capabilities assessment”, deliverable D1), together with the information obtained from the market study (see next section), are the starting point for choosing the most appropriate positioning and commercial strategy to compete successfully in this market, which we will discuss in the next workshop [WS2].
Market research of the wine industry in the United Kingdom
In parallel with the previous activities, Bizuking will carry out a study of the wine market in the United Kingdom from the perspective of your winery and wine offering. The market research will include the following sections:
- Market overview and key indicators
- Taxonomy of the British wine market
- Market organisation, competitive analysis and trends
- Post-Brexit regulations and standards
- Business opportunities
The market research will especially delve into those areas that are of particular interest to your business. The resulting report (“Market research of the wine industry in the United Kingdom”, deliverable D2) will be presented and discussed in the positioning and commercial strategy workshop (see next section).
Workshop: Positioning and commercial strategy for the British market [WS2]
This online workshop has an estimated duration of six to eight hours, which can be split into two sessions on different dates. In the first part of the session, we will present the results of the “Market study of wine in the United Kingdom” (deliverable D2) and the “Strengths and capabilities assessment” (deliverable D1). In the second part of the meeting, we will discuss a proposal for your winery’s positioning and commercial strategy for the UK with you and your team, which we will update with your comments. The agreed proposal will be set out in a document (“Positioning and commercial strategy for the UK”, deliverable D3), which will serve as a basis for prospecting importers and distributors and will guide the project’s next steps.
Prospecting for importers and distributors
Bizuking will search for British importers and distributors whose characteristics fit your business objectives and whose positioning and strategy are compatible with those of your winery and your wines. Among them, Bizuking will preselect at least 20 potential partners, whose information will be collected in the “Business partners prospecting report” (deliverable D4). For each of them, detailed and updated information will be provided, including, among other points, the following:
- Basic information (official name, trademarks, years in the market, number of employees, financial information, etc.)
- Business profile (type of player, positioning and areas of specialisation, channels and segments in which it operates, wine and producers catalogue, etc.)
- Internal organisation and key people (including name, position, professional profile and contact information)
- General contact information (location, email, telephone numbers, website, social networks, etc.)
- Analysis and assessment as an importer or distributor for your business in the United Kingdom
Meeting to prioritise partners and commercial actions [WS3]
This online work meeting is estimated to last two to three hours. We will present the results of the importer and distributor prospecting work, discuss the prioritisation of the selected companies with you, and discuss the action plan for the rest of the project.
Presentations to selected importers and distributors
In accordance with the prioritisation we have previously agreed upon, we will contact the various importers and distributors to present your winery and your wines. The aim is to arouse their interest in your winery, gather their impressions, and propose the organisation of meetings with you and your team. Bizuking’s experience in previous projects in the UK wine market has allowed us to build a solid network of contacts in the sector, which significantly facilitates the effectiveness of our work, in contrast to what would be a mere cold calling campaign or mass email sending. The result of all these contacts will be recorded in the “End of project report” (deliverable D5), which will be delivered at the end of the project.
Organising face-to-face meetings and wine tastings with importers and distributors
Whenever possible, we will organise face-to-face meetings and wine tastings so that you can meet the selected importers and distributors in person. These meetings are essential to establish business relationships with the companies that will potentially be responsible for importing and marketing your wines in the UK. Often, these companies consider it just as important to meet the team behind the winery as to taste their wines. No one is better than you and your team to convey the values and characteristics that make your wines unique and the passion and care you put into their production. Occasionally, and depending on your availability, hybrid meetings can also be organised where only the wine travels, and you conduct the meeting and tasting online with the importer or distributor’s team.
It is important to note that, for various reasons, not all the companies contacted will be open to holding a face-to-face meeting before the project ends. In these cases, we will take care to understand and gather their impressions about your offer and see the possibility of scheduling meetings on other dates beyond the end of the project.
End of project meeting [Mf]
This online working meeting has a usual duration of 2 hours. At the end of the project, we will hold a final meeting with you and your team to present the results of the contacts with the selected importers and distributors, make a series of recommendations on how you can continue with the business development work from this point, and discuss the next steps. The conclusions of the meeting will also be included in the aforementioned “End of project report” (deliverable D5).
The programme will end here, but actually, this is the beginning of the path to developing the full potential of your winery and your wines in the United Kingdom. Of course, Bizuking will be at your disposal to continue supporting the growth of your business in the United Kingdom and other markets.

How to enrol
If you want more information about the programme, contact us by phone or email. You can also book a free, no-obligation initial meeting with one of our consultants on our website using this link.
In addition to explaining the program in detail and answering any questions, we will check with you whether this solution is the most suitable for your needs. There are some circumstances in which Bizuking may condition access to the program (for example, if we notice that the company is not yet ready to compete in this market or if the current edition is already complete). In all cases, we will offer you some alternatives. We recommend you take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions section.
Frequently asked questions
The following is a selection of the most common questions asked by our clients. If you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
I have no experience in exporting. Can I still enrol on this programme?
The programme is designed for companies that already have an international growth strategy and the necessary capabilities to export their products. If your winery is not yet at that point, we can also help you. Talk to us, and we will study with you how to prepare your company to grow abroad and select the markets that may be most interesting according to your company’s characteristics and product offering.
Our winery already sells in the United Kingdom. What can this programme offer me?
If your winery is already present in the United Kingdom but you are not satisfied with the results achieved, this programme can help you expand your network of importers and distributors, refresh your commercial strategy and give a new boost to sales. If, on the other hand, you are happy with the progress of the business and your commercial partners in the United Kingdom and you want to accelerate growth, this programme is probably not for you, but we can offer other solutions. Please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will discuss your case for free and without obligation.
Do you have a similar programme for markets other than the UK?
We have experience carrying out similar projects for other markets. This programme was specifically designed for Spanish wineries that want to establish themselves and grow in the UK market due to the high demand we noticed among our clients. If you are interested in another market, do not hesitate to contact us, and we will study with you whether we can help you and how.
Is the programme exclusive to Spanish wineries?
No. Bizuking also has experience designing similar projects for wineries in other countries in Europe and the New World. Talk to us to discuss your plans, and we will propose a solution appropriate to your objectives and needs. The price of a project with a scope equivalent to that of the basic package would be the same as that of the programme.
Are the programme’s costs compatible with public export aids such as the EU CMO grants?
Yes. The content and purpose of our programme are compatible with most public aid for the wine and export sectors. Some of our clients have fully or partially financed their projects with Bizuking by taking advantage of these grants. If you have any specific requirements, do not hesitate to discuss them with us. We can also help you obtain and manage those grants through one of our partners in Spain.
What dedication will the programme require from us?
We are aware that the schedule of the management team of a winery is very tight. The programme is designed to get the most out of the time you dedicate to us. In the section What is included, you can find more information about the meetings and workshops that require your participation or that of the people you designate. We will adjust to your availability and make the most of the time you dedicate to us, executing the project autonomously, but at the same time ensuring that you have control over all important decisions and the progress of the project.
What happens if the programme is fully booked?
If you are interested in participating in the program but the programme is currently fully booked, Bizuking will offer you the opportunity to join on the earliest available date.
Can I delay the start of my participation in the program?
Yes. We will always try to adapt to your needs, but you must bear in mind that the dates we can offer you are subject to availability and are prioritised in strict order of enrolment.
